Popcorn decorated cupcakes for a movie themed party! These cupcakes are super fun, so I totally had to share my tutorial with you on how to make popcorn decorated cupcakes. Mini marshmallows are cut with scissors and then painted with a touch of yellow food coloring, to look exactly like popcorn. It’s super easy!
How fun would a movie theater themed party be?? Serve (real) popcorn, big boxes of candy, pizza and these cupcakes…all while watching a movie. I love this party theme for older kids and teenagers, because sometimes it’s hard to find a “cool” theme for older kids’ birthday parties. Because who doesn’t love going to the movies??
SUPPLIES:
- Cupcakes and frosting
- Red and white striped cupcake liners
- Bag of mini marshmallows
- Yellow gel food coloring
- Clear white sparkling sugar
I squished three mini marshmallows together, then took clean kitchen scissors and snipped the top of one of the marshmallows across the top, in the shape of an x. Gently use your finger to push your finger into the x to separate the top of the marshmallow where it was cut. If the marshmallows are sticking to the scissors, spray the end of the scissor blades with baking spray.
Set cut marshmallows in a single layer on a piece of wax paper, leaving uncovered, at room temperature for several days, to harden slightly.
To add the “butter” to your popcorn, use a fine paint brush and yellow food coloring, to paint splashes of yellow on each popcorn kernel.
Don’t forget about the cupcakes! For my Popcorn Cupcakes, I baked a dozen of my vanilla cupcakes and a dozen of my chocolate cupcakes, and used my favorite vanilla buttercream frosting, which I added a touch of yellow food coloring to. I found red and white striped cupcake liners, which looked like the retro popcorn bags, to bake my cupcakes in.
Now you are ready to top off your cupcakes with your popcorn! I sprinkled clear sparkling sugar on top to mimic salt 🙂
Making the marshmallow popcorn is easy, yet time consuming. Imperfection is key, so have the kids help out!!
XOXO,
Kelly

I am sharing this idea with the 20 year old daughter who just moved into her own place and likes to do fun parties or get togethers with themes. At first I actually thought that the marshmallows were popcorn. Great idea! Thank you.

November 13, 2017 at 11:57 AMKelly! Are you freaking serious! I was so convinced that was real popcorn. How on earth did you think of cutting up little marshmallows. So so adorable!

November 14, 2017 at 9:25 PMThanks Stacy! At first when I opened the bag of marshmallows, I saw they had all melted into each other, so I thought they were ruined, but it actually helped to make the marshmallows look more like popcorn! I had so much fun making these and my love of real popcorn helped lol 🙂 XOXO
