An Overnight San Francisco Adventure

The best part of living in the Central Valley in California, is that we are only a few hours away from the mountains, the ocean and one of my favorite cities…San Francisco.  Sometimes we day trip to San Francisco, but James recently planned an overnight trip for us to go to San Francisco, to see a fun musical.  Read on to hear about our (haunted?) hotel stay, what we ate and some theater shenanigans!

This was a whirlwind trip, as we were only in San Francisco for 20-hours.  James bought us tickets to see the musical The Book of Mormon, so we planned the trip around the Saturday afternoon show, with plans to get to San Francisco early, enjoy our show and then have a nice dinner out.  Well thank you traffic for delaying us an hour 🙁

By the time we got to San Francisco (via BART once we got to Dublin), we went to check into our hotel, Hotel Whitcomb.  Supposedly this hotel is haunted, as it is very old and historic.  Not sure this place is actually haunted, but the front desk staff could certainly use some training in customer service.  Oh well.  For the cost, the hotel wasn’t too bad.  It’s an older hotel and the rooms are tight.  There’s no refrigerator, microwave or coffee maker in the rooms, but there is a Starbucks in the lobby.

Hotel Whitcomb – 1231 Market Street, San Francisco

After dropping our bags off at the hotel, James and I walked to Union Square to hit up Louis Vuitton.  I can’t go to San Francisco and not go to my favorite store…and of course I couldn’t leave without buying something!!

James and I quickly changed into our nice clothes and headed over to The Orpheum Theater to see The Book of Mormon.  Hotel Whitcomb is a half a block away from the theater, so it was great that we could walk everywhere we wanted to go.

The Book of Mormon on Broadway was created by the same creators who made South Park.  So if you know South Park, then you know this musical was full of jaw-dropping, “I-can’t-believe-they-just-said-that/did-that” humor that isn’t for the easily offended.  The musical was hilarious…oh and I was raised Mormon by the way.  Devout Mormons probably would have gotten up and walked out of this show, but I have a sense of humor and firmly believe that we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously.  And I am a HUGE South Park lover.

After the show, we did a little more shopping and I jumped on the Lululemon bandwagon (thanks to James for insisting on buying me a pair of workout pants).  After our quick shopping trip at the Westfield Mall, we decided to walk to dinner.  When in the the city, James and I walk as much as possible!  Otherwise you miss out on the full San Francisco experience.

Dinner was my choice and I researched and researched the best steakhouse in San Francisco.  Last minute reservations limited my choices, but I decided on Alfred’s because it is a classic San Francisco tradition.

Filet mignon and grilled broccoli for me!  The service here is outstanding and the food is what to expect at your typical steakhouse.  Not the best filet I have ever had, but it was good.

James got the Alfred’s Cut bone-in ribeye steak with a side of mashed potatoes (not pictured).  James like the flavor and loved the creamy, buttery mashed potatoes.  Oh and his steak was $75!!

After dinner we ubered back to da hotel to watch a little television and then lights out by 9PM.  Yeah we are SERIOUS party animals hahaha.  The bed was super comfortable and we turned the fan on the air conditioning on, to drown out the horns honking and sirens that go on all night in the city.  Worked like a charm because I slept all night!

So breakfast Sunday morning was going to be at Dottie’s True Blue Cafe, but after getting there just a half hour after they opened, there was already a line around the corner.  Sometimes I can be impatient (shut up James), so we decided to walk around the corner to Homeskillet.  No line!

Order at the counter and refill your own coffee!  Food is delivered to your table when it’s ready.

Guess what I got for breakfast?!  An egg white omelet with ham, dry wheat toast and a side of fruit.  Simple, healthy, filling.  My breakfast didn’t blow my mind, but it was good.

James got the egg, bacon and cheese breakfast sandwich on sourdough with a side of hash browns.  James liked his breakfast sandwich but said the hash browns could have been crispier.

After finishing breakfast, James and I started walking back to our hotel and ran right into the Heart of the City Farmers Market at United Nations Plaza.  Open Sundays and Wednesday!

So many awesome vendors….here are a few of my favorites:

So many different varieties of mushrooms…including some I had never heard of.

The guy at Cipponeri was quite the salesman…we walked away with two containers of almond butter 🙂

And since we were so close to city hall, James and I walked over to take a picture in front of the place we got married almost four years ago!

A quick walk back to the hotel to check out and head home!  A fun little get away with my sweetie 🙂

I love fun overnight trips, and it sounds like you guys had a nice time! There’s something about packing an overnight bag and heading out of town (even for a night) that just feels so exciting and relaxing! San Francisco is on our bucket list, but since it’s quite the trip for us, we would need to go for a few days for sure!

That looks like such a fun trip! I usually turn in around 9:30pm so I am not party animal either! San Fran is certainly on my must visit places someday. I am so jealous of you being so close. The weather looks like it is so nice. I feel like I haven’t seen the sun here since last September.

Very nice. I go by those places very day. You should go by the main library next time. They have some really cool exhibits most of the time.
