Flank steak is a leaner cut of beef that is delicious, if prepared and cooked right. Today I am sharing with you my marinade recipe and cooking tips so your flank steak cooking is a success!
Because this cut of beef is leaner, it definitely benefits from marinating overnight in the marinade. Grilling the steak takes just 6-minutes on each side (depending on your desired doneness), so this is a great meal that you can make quickly even after a long day at work!
Preparing the marinade is quick and easy. Just place your flank steak in a large ziplock bag, add all the marinade ingredients and shake the bag until everything is mixed up. No dirtying of dishes required! Refrigerate overnight or for several hours, to really allow the marinade to soak into the steak.
Also, you will need a grill to make this flank steak. Unsure of what type of grill to buy? Check out this guide on Globo Surf to help steer you in the right direction.
Marinated and Grilled Flank Steak
Print RecipeIngredients
- 1 flank steak, trimmed of sinew and fat
- 1/4 cup red wine (I used Cabernet Sauvignon)
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 2 tablespoons steak seasoning (I used Rodelle Texas Style Brisket Rub)
Instructions
Tenderize the flank steak by scoring the top with a knife or poking the steak with a fork. Place steak in a large ziplock bag. Add the wine, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke and steak seasonings into the bag. Seal and shake to incorporate the ingredients and coat the steak. Place bag in the refrigerator to marinate the steak overnight or for several hours.
Remove steak from the refrigerator one hour prior to grilling, to allow the steak to come to room temperature.
Heat the grill to medium heat, and once the grill is to temperature, add the steak. Cover with the grill lid and grill for 6-minutes. Flip steak over and grill for an additional 6-minutes or longer, depending on your desired doneness. Remove grilled steak from the grill and let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing thin slices of steak, against the grain.
Notes
Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an air tight container.
Here is a great tutorial on how and why to slice meat against the grain.
And did you know that Rodelle makes savory spices too?? Not just vanilla extracts! This Rodelle Texas Style Brisket Rub has a kick to it! It’s sweet and smokey in flavor, which works wonderfully on this flank steak. You can also use your favorite steak seasoning in the marinade instead…any steak seasoning will work.
Juicy and medium-rare is how we like our steak around here!
Canned corn and 90-second microwave brown rice are easy side dishes to have with this steak too.

May 22, 2018 at 8:32 PMThank you for the marinating and meat cooking tips. Sometimes I get in a rut and cook the same kind of meat a lot. I grew up on a farm where we had our own beef available for consumption. I tend to cook chicken or fish, but this recipe sounds like a delicious way to cook up a steak.

May 24, 2018 at 6:30 AMHow awesome to grow up on a farm where you get to consume the beef you raised! I cook a lot of chicken at home too, but need to branch out every now and again to appease the boys. But you better bet that when we go out to a nice restaurant, this girl always orders a filet mignon 🙂

May 23, 2018 at 4:54 AMI love that you added in how to cut the meat! On a cut like this how you cut it is EVERYTHING. People can think they hate the meat because it chewy when its really just how it was cut!

May 24, 2018 at 6:31 AMTotally!! Texture is everything. I notice with lunchmeat, it can taste totally different if it’s cut thick or paper thin (how I like it. So learning how to properly slice your meat is definitely important 🙂
