I won’t lie, I like expensive skincare and haircare as much as the next person, but if you’ve ever taken the time to read the labels, you were probably taken aback by the amount of chemicals in the products.
Now, I’m not saying all of them are necessarily bad. Amodimethicone, hyaluronic acid, fatty alcohols, peptides, niacinamide, etc. are things we all like to see, but that’s not all you’ll find in store-bought products. You’ll also often find denatured alcohol, tons of fragrance, and other irritants that will damage your skin barrier and cause a lot of problems down the line.
My solution to this? Using natural products! I know, I know, you can buy natural products, too, but do you ever really know how they’re made and what’s in them? Hardly. That’s why I did a little digging to see how to make beauty treatments yourself, with safe ingredients. They cost a fraction of the price of what you’d normally pay for skincare or haircare and they work wonderfully.
Keep reading and I’ll show you some truly delicious recipes for your skin and hair.
Food Ingredients and Their Beauty Benefits
Before you dismiss this as just fluff, I’ll have you know that the following ingredients are proven to work. Even if you’re a cosmetologist, taking RocketCert classes to prep for your continuing education exam will be of massive value to you. Very underrated!
1. For Healing and Hydrating
What’s a beauty treatment without honey? Honey is a superstar for pretty much everything you can think of, and that includes your skin. It moisturizes your skin and fights bacteria, so it’s great for breakouts and even small cuts.
Aloe vera is another amazing ingredient that will soothe irritations and redness, plus it will leave your skin plump and hydrated. But my favorite is probably coconut oil because it works for both skin and hair. Don’t use it on your face if you’re acne-prone, however.
2. For Exfoliating and Brightening
Yogurt is the winner for me here because it contains lactic acid, which naturally exfoliates and brightens the skin. Sugar and oatmeal are also really popular for exfoliating and brightening, but I’d only recommend using them on your body. Mechanical exfoliators are just too rough for your face, but they work great on your body, especially if you have stubborn dry patches.
3. For Controlling Oil and Fighting Acne
Lemon juice is amazing, but you need to dilute it or it will irritate you. It helps with oily skin and fades dark spots. Apple cider vinegar is also very popular because it balances the skin’s pH and gently exfoliates. Turmeric is currently all the rage and you’ll find it in many skin care products because it’s packed with anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and acne scars.
How to Make DIY Beauty Treatments at Home
Let’s get cookin’ (not really, but you get the idea) and make some beauty treatments in the kitchen!
1. Honey and Yoghurt Face Mask
Mix equal parts honey and plain yogurt in a small bowl, then add a few drops of olive oil. Apply it to your face and let it sit for about 15 minutes before you rinse it with lukewarm water. make sure to pat your face dry, not rub it. You’ll immediately notice how smooth and refreshed your skin is.
Honey will hydrate your skin, yogurt will exfoliate it a little, and olive oil will nourish it.
2. Oatmeal Banana Hair Mask
If your hair is frizzy, dry, or brittle, you need a nourishing mask and this banana oatmeal one will soothe your itchy scalp, absorb excess oil, soften, and strengthen your hair. To make it, you’ll need a ripe banana, a handful of finely ground oatmeal, and coconut milk.
Mash the banana until it’s smooth, then add oatmeal and stir it. Slowly add coconut milk and stir some more until you get a thick paste. Apply it to damp, clean hair starting from the scalp all the way down to the ends. Leave it for 20 minutes and then rinse well with warm water.
3. Lemon Sugar Lip Scrub
I don’t like mechanical exfoliants for my face, but I love them for the lips! Dry, chapped lips aren’t just uncomfortable, they’ll also make any lipstick look uneven.
Mix a teaspoon of sugar with a few drops of lemon juice and add honey until you have a thick paste. Once the paste is even, gently rub it on your lips in a circular motion. After about a minute, rinse it off and apply a moisturizing lip balm.
Conclusion
You can find some truly amazing skincare and haircare in a bottle at your local department store, I’m not arguing with that. But you don’t necessarily need to spend half of your income on maintenance; you can just go to your kitchen and whip yourself up a hair mask or a face treatment!
