How to Best Take Care of Your Skin as You Age

Your skin, as the largest organ of your body, is also the organ that takes the most battering, light damage and surface damage as you navigate through life.

Some people have acne as a teenager and therefore, require one form of steroid cream or another; others battle with psoriasis on their face and scalp and use hydrocortisone prescribed by their doctor and some people never have to tackle any skin complaint at all.

As you age, it becomes more important, for both aesthetics and health, for you to take extra care of your skin on the face and across your entire body and with this in mind, here is how to best take care of your skin as you age.

Invest in a Humidifier

Firstly, it would be an excellent investment to purchase a good quality air humidifier that you can use every single time you feel as if the air inside one or more rooms within your home feels stagnant, musty or dry.

Humidifiers will reduce the risk of your skin becoming irritated, itchy and flaky and as an ideal, you should aim to keep the indoor humidity of your home somewhere between forty-five and sixty percent.

Shield Against the Sun

Back in the day, nobody would have batted an eyelid if you were out there on the hottest part of a summer day, with lemon juice in your hair and cooking oil on your skin as,unfortunately, nobody knew the supreme dangers the sun could do.

These days, however, enough research and knowledge has proved unequivocally that the sun can cause both minor and much more serious health issues, so always gravitate towards shade on the hottest part of the day, protect skin that is never usually exposed and always wear SPF 30 sunscreen at the very least.

If you are currently residing, or else are considering moving to, a reputable and established assisted living community, you will be aware of the supreme importance the staff members and medical professionals place on sun protection.

Upgrade Your Evening Bath Experience

Bathing is, of course, one of the best ways to relieve itchy, dry, or irritated skin, anywhere on your body and, what is more, washing thoroughly in the shower or bath will also provide your skin with the high levels of moisture it needs to stay healthy.

As you age, skin tends to become more susceptible to bruises, cracks and peeling and as such, you should look to make key changes to your morning and evening routines to suit.

From now on, keep your showers and baths to under fifteen minutes, so as not to saturate the skin; similarly, leave a little bit of moisture on your hands, arms, legs, and the tops of your feet instead of removing every last drop with the towel and never use hot water. Instead stick to warm water.

Additionally, switch to using animal-friendly, fragrance-free and gentle products that are designed to be used on sensitive skin.
