Whether you eat these scones for breakfast or for a snack, I swear you will fall in love with them. Perfectly balanced sweetness from the sugar and chocolate chips, with the crunch of the exterior of the baked scone, with the soft moistness inside the center. If you think you don’t like scones, then give these a try and I swear I will change your mind!
My hubby had a class for work and asked if I would make some scones for the guys. All the guys James works with are always appreciative of the desserts I make and I think James feels proud when the guys sing praises over whatever I make them. Not that everything is always a hit….there are plenty of my creations that go in the trash because I would never think about letting anyone other than James taste them hahaha.
I made two batches of these scones to feed all the hungry firefighters, as well as to have a few extra for my daddy who was coming out to my house to take me to a doctors appointment. My dad had never had my scones before and he was so sweet to call me the next day to tell me how much he liked them!! And the firefighters?? Oh they loved them! James said he heard someone say they were the best scones they had ever had! So what more proof do you need to make these?!!
Ok. So. These scones are easy to make, so please do not be intimidated by the thought of making your own scones. And there’s nothing like a homemade scone! Another easy part of this recipe is that you use all cold ingredients, so there’s no waiting around for eggs, butter and cream to come to room temperature. Yay!
You can bake your scones on a cookie sheet….
Or in a scone pan! One of my best friends bought me this scone pan, and I was happy to put it to use. The scones bake up the same, whether using the cookie sheet or a scone pan, however I found the scone pan helped the scones to keep their shape!
TIP: I like to make my scones and then pop them into the refrigerator to chill as I wait for the oven to heat up. This helps the scones keep their shape and bake up nice and tender. The colder the better before baking!
Chocolate Chip Scones
Print RecipeIngredients
- SCONES:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 6 tablespoons white granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup cold, unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- TOPPING:
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- raw sugar
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375-degrees. Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
SCONES: Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and sugar in a large bowl. Use a pastry cutter to cut the cold butter into the flour mixture. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, vanilla extract and heavy cream. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Gently fold in the chocolate chips. Portion the scone dough into two even halves and place one half onto a lightly floured surface and pat into an 8-inch circle, approximately 1-1/2 inches high. Cut into 8 pie shaped slices and transfer to prepared cookie sheet to add the topping. Repeat process with the second half.
TOPPING: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, cream and vanilla extract. Use a pastry brush to lightly brush the top of each scone. Sprinkle raw sugar on top of each scone.
Bake scones in 375-degree oven for 20-24 minutes or until golden brown. Remove baked scones from the oven and let set for several minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling.
Notes
Store scones at room temperature in an airtight container for two to three days.
So if you are looking for a quick and easy recipe for an upcoming brunch, definitely pin these and try them out! People will go crazy over them! Plus I love that they can be made the day before!!
XOXO,

November 25, 2019 at 7:48 AMThanks Laura!! My BFF bought me the scone pan for my birthday and it has taken me TOO long to actually use it. But now that I have used it, I am all about it. It helps the scones keep their shape rather than baking on a sheet pan. Definitely put this on your Christmas list!!
