Baked protein powder donuts are a healthier treat or breakfast option because I am using protein powder and whole wheat flour in the donut batter, and swapping out the butter and oil with nut butter. Looking for a healthy breakfast or a new way to get that protein powder in?? Then these baked donuts are the answer!
It has been far too long since I have made donuts so I decided it was time to bust out my donut pan. And since James is on a diet and drinking protein shakes twice a day, I decided to make donuts using his protein powder. I used chocolate flavored protein powder to make these donuts, but you can use whatever protein powder you have on hand…just make sure the flavor will work with peanut butter though! Or almond butter.
I love how easy these donuts are to mix up too. Just one bowl! Spoon the batter into your donut pan and bake! And there are all types of protein powders out there. The best protein powder to use in this recipe? 100% whey protein. Using casein protein in this recipe may make these donuts a little dry.
Baked Protein Powder Donuts
Print RecipeIngredients
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- 3 tablespoons peanut butter
- 1/3 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1/4 cup casein protein powder (I used chocolate protein powder)
- 1/3 cup whole wheat flour
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- VANILLA GLAZE:
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1-1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 teaspoons hot water
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350-degrees and spray a donut pan generously with baking spray. Set aside.
In a medium sized bowl, mix together the eggs, peanut butter and almond milk until smooth. Add the protein powder, whole wheat flour, sugar, vanilla extract, salt and baking powder. Mix until combined.
Spoon batter into prepared donut pan, filling donut cavity 3/4 of the way with batter, and bake in 350-degree oven for 10-minutes. Remove baked donuts from oven and remove donuts from the pan and place them on a wire rack to finish cooling. Once donut pan has cooled off, spoon the remaining batter into the donut pan and bake.
VANILLA GLAZE: In a microwave safe bowl melt the butter. Stir in the powdered sugar, vanilla extract and hot water. Add more water to get a thinner consistency. If you need to thicken up your glaze, add more powdered sugar.
Dunk cooled donuts into the bowl of glaze, coating the top of each donut. Immediately add sprinkles and place on wire rack to set.
Notes
Store donuts in an airtight container at room temperature.
Want to keep these a little healthier? I guess you could skip the glaze (but really it isn’t that many more calories). If you still wanted sprinkles in your donuts, without the glaze, you could add sprinkles to the batter before baking too!
I just LOVE the carousel sprinkles from India Tree!! Sprinkles just make me happy….and they make everything PRETTY!

February 6, 2019 at 6:34 AMFinally I will feel less guilty about eating a donut for breakfast. And the glaze looks so perfectly set. my children will devour this, just that I will have to replace peanut butter with almond butter due to allergy issues.

February 12, 2019 at 7:58 AMThese donuts look delicious. To tell you the truth you could put frosting and sprinkles on about anything and it would look delicious to me!!! I like the addition of the protein power and that would be enticing to my sons. I’m going to have to try these donuts.
