I looooooove me some bread! I am a carb-loving girl hands down. Add some garlic to my bread and I am over the moon! But instead of an unhealthy, butter soaked garlic bread, I have an easy and healthier alternative to your average garlic bread! This garlic bread goes perfect with any dinner and no one will know that it’s secretly healthier for them!!
I grew up eating garlic bread every weekend with the barbecued dinners my dad made for the family. Rich, butter soaked french bed with garlic seasoning on top, baked to perfection. Mmmmmm. So since I am participating in #RecipeMakeover this week, I was inspired to makeover some of my favorite family foods to give them a healthier spin! Still just as yummy, but with a few less calories! So this recipe is the first of four I am sharing with you this week. By Friday you will have all the healthy recipes needed for a healthy, at-home steakhouse dinner!
Barlean’s is one of the sponsors of #RecipeMakeover and sent me their Butter Flavored Coconut Oil to use when making over one of my recipes. So I figured this garlic bread would be a perfect way to use the coconut oil! And it was! You can totally use butter or olive oil in place of the coconut oil, but the Barlean’s Butter Flavored Coconut Oil is organic, vegan, trans fat free, does not have any dairy, gluten or soy in it, and does not have any coconut flavor or odor!
You can use your favorite type of bakery bread. Obviously a whole wheat or multi-grain bread would be healthier, but I found these smaller loafs of bread that were perfect for portion control (and were James and Ethan approved).
The coconut oil melts easily in the microwave and TOTALLY does not smell or taste like coconut. James was like, “Wow. That’s crazy…you can’t tell the coconut oil even came from a coconut.” So brush the oil on each side of bread, and then smear on the garlic paste! Sprinkle on some Italian seasoning for even more flavor.
Baked Garlic Bread Made Healthier
Print RecipeIngredients
- 1 loaf whole-wheat french bread, fresh from the store bakery (or your favorite variety of bread)
- 1-2 tablespoons Barlean's Butter Flavored Organic Coconut Oil (or butter or olive oil)
- 2-3 teaspoons garlic paste
- Italian seasoning, to taste (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375-degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil and set aside.
Cut the loaf of whole wheat french bread in half, length wise. In a small bowl, melt the coconut oil in the microwave. Use a pastry brush to lightly brush the oil on each side of the bread. Spread 1-2 teaspoons of garlic paste evenly, on each side of bread. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning if desired.
Place bread, seasoned side up, on the baking sheet. Bake bread in 375-degree oven for 15-20 minutes or until bread is golden brown. Remove the bread from the oven and let sit for several minutes before cutting into desired sized slices.
Notes
Store leftover slices of bread at room temperature, in an airtight container.
You need to pay attention to your bread as it bakes, because the bake times will vary. We have all walked away and have burned bread before…yeah I have been guilty of that a time or two. Bake the bread until you reach your desired crispiness.
Slice it up!
And this bread smelled SO good while it was baking. But I am a garlic loving freak. So. Yeah.
Stay tuned! This week is full of #RecipeMakeover recipes! This bread is just the beginning of a complete meal I am bringing you by the end of the week. Make sure you sign up for my free email subscription so you don’t miss out on the other healthy recipes I will be sharing!
